Flexby Expands Its EU Research Network Through Partnership with FUEL-UP

Flexby has strengthened its ties within the European research community by joining forces with the EU-funded FUEL-UP project, a key milestone in its ongoing clustering and networking strategy, which already includes collaborations with four other EU-funded initiatives.

FUEL-UP is a four-year project launched in January 2024 to turn biogenic waste into advanced biofuels, supporting the green transition and defossilisation of the aviation and marine transport sectors. The project develops innovative solutions to produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and marine fuels by converting 100% biogenic feedstock into stabilised deoxygenated pyrolysis oils (SDPO), which are further refined into renewable fuels.

At demo scale (TRL-7), FUEL-UP will validate a process that produces biofuels from lignocellulosic streams, yielding about 45–50% aviation fuel, 30–35% marine diesel, and 20% heavy naphtha. The project will also support EU certification to ensure the fuels are ready for practical and socially accepted use.

FUEL-UP is coordinated by SINTEF and brings together 12 partners from 8 EU countries, including SINTEF Ocean (Norway), BTG and BTG-Next (Netherlands), Tüpras (Turkey), RANIDO (Czech Republic), AVECOM (Belgium), DLR (Germany), Aristeng (Luxembourg), ETA-Florence (Italy), LIST (Luxembourg), and Ketjen (Netherlands).

This new partnership underscores Flexby’s commitment to fostering synergies across European research and innovation. By engaging with complementary projects, networks, and clusters, Flexby aims to promote knowledge sharing, expand the reach of research results, and speed up the adoption of its technology.

Over the coming years, Flexby will take an active role in joint dissemination activities with FUEL-UP, including co-organised events. These efforts will enhance the visibility, impact, and long-term sustainability of both projects’ outcomes, further strengthening their presence in the European research and innovation landscape.
